Mandala Maze

It started out as a great idea and a spiral drawn in chalk:

and then magic happened!

Sculptor Tessa Hawkes invited people attending the 2016 Saffron Walden Maze Festival to co-create a a unique snail shell mandala maze in her garden, and even she was amazed by what evolved. Out on the Common, people were buzzing with talk about it, and I couldn’t resist adding a square when I went to see it.That’s me working on my little segment above, oblivious to the camera and the world at large.

Visitors were invited to choose from a variety of materials – buttons, toothpicks, macaroni pieces, lentils, stones, shells, etc – and then use them to decorate a section. No other rules, just an invitation to sink to the ground to make your mark.

Absolutely awe-inspiring!
