Toward the Stones

A long string of islands, two ferries, a host of views and ancient monuments, and a spectacular sunset at a sacred stone circle make this one of the longest and most enjoyable days of our journey.

The Stones

We started with a short ferry ride over to Eriskay, then drove across islands and causeways, stopping for hikes and cups of tea, then slalomed our way across the Sound of Harris, with the ferry weaving between giant rocks and teensy islands where a few seals watched us watching them, and into Leverburgh, famous for its fresh seafood. We then drove up and across Harris and Lewis, arriving at marvelous Callanish just in time to watch the sun set in the distance behind the majestic stones,
